AICP Courses
For 2010, Community Growth Institute has prepared four courses that will be eligible for continuing education credit with the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Developing Effective Small Town Comprehensive Plans (3/17/10)
Discusses the purpose of a Comprehensive Plan and how they can be tailored to the specific needs of a small town or rural area. We will discuss specifically how small town Comprehensive Plans may differ from those in larger, more urban settings and strategies for ensuring that the Plan is useful and practical for day-to-day use.
Small Town Economic Development: What Does Zoning Have To Do With It? (6/16/10)
Discusses traditional efforts to bring jobs to small towns and how a community’s zoning and land use planning can either hurt or help with these efforts.
Mixed Use Zoning: Does it Apply in Rural Towns? (9/15/10)
Many planners are promoting “mixed use” zoning to allow for a more compact mix of residential and commercial uses and public facilities. In most presentations of these ideas, the setting is a large metropolitan city. Do these concepts apply to small towns? How are they the same as larger cities? How are they different?
Implementing Form-Based Codes in Rural Towns (12/1/10)
Discusses the concept of “form-based” codes – regulations which attempt to create desirable communities primarily by the design and form of buildings, streets, and public spaces rather than by separating uses into zones. Typically, these are discussed as applicable to a large urban setting. Do they apply in Rural Towns? How do they differ and how can they be effectively implemented?
